Recently, a friend liked a Facebook status by Joyce Meyer Ministries. The status was "God wants us to need each other. That's why He's given each of us unique gifts and talents." This got me thinking about several things, in particular, friendships.
All relationships are two way streets. There is a delicate balance of give and take. Feelings get hurt when things become unbalanced. Maybe we offer to take our friend's or neighbor's kiddos a bunch... hoping that maybe just once they might offer to take ours? Maybe we sit and listen to their problems over coffee hoping to get a word in edge wise. Sometimes we wait patiently through our friend's season of life and then they graciously are there for our difficult seasons of life.
What just really struck me today is "God wants us to need each other". What if in a friendship, someone feels that they are no longer needed? Maybe they feel that they have been replaced by another friend, or a hobby, or even by chocolate. We begin to then miss out on the unique talents and gifts of the people who surround us, our friends. I would say that then we could miss out on their knowledge, experiences, and even their outside viewpoints.
Without each other, things get narrowed in further. Things get more in a tunnel vision mode. Having more people that we need in our lives adds value to our own life. Having those people that can speak truth in love, often keep us from doing something rash or stupid. Also, it's worth mentioning, that it also feels pretty good to be needed or wanted.
Today, is a great day to celebrate those unique gifts and talents of the people who surround us. Everyone has unique strengths and it can only help in our own weakness.
